Color Trends 2016: Newest Color Directions In Fashion And Interior Design

I honestly don’t know how the color forecasters determine color trends, but they all seem to be in accord with one another. The color trends for 2016 are diverse, a little bit retro, and quite yummy gorgeous!

As a designer, I rely almost entirely on my instincts to know what’s coming next. I believe we have this little invisible cord that connects us to one another. It allows us to tap into a universal pulse that determines trends among other things. Shhh…don’t tell the Color Association I said that.

It can be music, food, dance, politics, or color. It comes in waves, and sometimes a trend becomes a classic, something that continues to please year after year. You know it’s a trend if it feels so right, and your buddy Michael agrees with you. For instance, I have never been a big fan of pink. Now, all of a sudden, I’m loving pink, and so is Michael. FYI, according to Pantone, a company that provides color forecasts for professionals in the interiors, fashion, and graphics industries, a pink called “honeysuckle” is the pink for 2016.

Our environment is our stimulus and our reaction to our environment determines trends. The colors we choose to use in our homes reflect our world. They also reflect our moods and they in turn, influence our moods.

I’m a big fan of the paint company, Benjamin Moore. I’m sure you know who they are. They have exquisite colors. They recently came out with a program called “Color Stories.” The colors are so pure and luminescent, I strongly urge you to investigate them if you are looking for a new color for your walls.

Benjamin Moore does a yearly forecast of color trends for interiors. In 2016, their forecast is inspired by “Balance,” as an over all theme. BM sees 4 trends for 2016. They are represented by 4 moods: Farm, Order, Escape, and Tribe.

1. FARM represents a return to basics, a return to the simple life. Colors and patterns have the look of the 70’s (spotted cow pattern). They are a bit nostalgic and conjure up images of cozy life on the farm. Included are rough textured fabrics that resemble burlap, tea stained colors that resemble tie dyes, plus vibrant vegetable colors, such as the color of tomatoes, bright green peas, corn, and carrots, lush creamy whites, creams, and butter yellow. The warm color of earth is the new neutral. Oak finishes are back. Stencil looks are important, as are needlepoint and macramé.

2. ORDER is just what it sounds like: geometric, minimalistic, and structured. Featured are polka dots and broad bright stripes, primary colors, and the use of black and white together, combined with just a pop of primary color.

3. ESCAPE. If you want to get away from it all and enter the world of fantasy, you may like to use soft translucent dreamy colors such as fairytale pink and frosted, pearlescent satin finishes.

4. TRIBE is rich tribal colors such as browns and berries, and smoldering orange, and spicy colors, plus metallic bronze, and textures such as beads.

Also forecast is gold in furniture upholstery. Color trends 2011 forecasts that gray continues to be a favorite for walls. It is very sophisticated and provides a neutral background for other colors. Another hot color is brownish dark purple. It’s very relaxing, intimate and cozy. Great for a bedroom! “Purples” are a popular color trend for 2016, such as wisteria, raisin, and plum.

For large walls, subtle colors are always popular, and they are still popular in 2016. Colors, such as pale citrus yellow, light green, lilac (either on the pink or blue side of the spectrum) are popular.

These are just a few of the color trends for 2016. You will be seeing them in wall paint colors, wallpaper and accessories. You will see them in designer rooms on TV and in shelter magazines.

Use some of these colors in your own home.

You can select a color from the aforementioned color trends 2016, if you wish, or just follow your own taste. A new color gives your room such a lift. It’ll put you in a relaxed happy mood too.

Color trends 2016” is meant to showcase what colors are hot, but you decide the colors you want in your home
